Install native 64bit Flash Player 11 on Linux

Update 3 [30 10 2011]: The script was updated to install of Flash Player 11.2 Beta
Update 2 [7 09 2011]: The script was updated to install rc1 of Flash Player 11
Update 1 [13 08 2011]: The script was updated to install b2 of Flash Player 11

Abobe released yesterday the first beta of Flash Player 11 for Linux 64 bit.

I’ve put together a small script that takes care of installing it on Ubuntu:

#!/bin/bash
# Script created by
# Romeo-Adrian Cioaba [email protected]

echo "Stopping any Firefox that might be running"
sudo killall -9 firefox

echo "Removing any other flash plugin previously installed:"
sudo apt-get remove -y --purge flashplugin-nonfree gnash gnash-common mozilla-plugin-gnash swfdec-mozilla libflashsupport nspluginwrapper
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f ~/.mozilla/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -f /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/*flash*
sudo rm -rfd /usr/lib/nspluginwrapper

echo "Installing Flash Player 11"
cd ~
wget 'http://download.macromedia.com/pub/labs/flashplatformruntimes/flashplayer11-2/flashplayer11-2_p1_install_lin_64_102611.tar.gz'
tar zxvf flashplayer11-2_p1_install_lin_64_102611.tar.gz
sudo cp libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/
sudo cp -r usr/ /usr

echo "Linking the libraries so Firefox and apps depending on XULRunner (vuze, liferea, rsswol) can find it."
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/firefox-addons/plugins/
sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/

# now doing some cleaning up:
sudo rm -rf libflashplayer.so
sudo rm -rf usr/
sudo rm -rf flashplayer11-2_p1_install_lin_64_102611.tar.gz

A very interesting application that comes bundled in this release is the “flash-player-properties” app which allows us to finally be able to set permissions to mic/camera on websites.

  1. Awesome … I just needed to find the path which was obvious from your script.

I cant believe how useless adobe’s instruction (or the lack of) are. On the download page it tells you how to uninstall it for Linux but not how to install it! As usual with the help of folks like you it only takes a few seconds to figure it out. Many thanks!

  2. Anyone know where I can find the 64 bit standalone player? ANY version would make me happy 🙂

  3. It worked smoothly. Thank you so much for your Script .
I found that the latest version of the flash player was available here , so I changed lines 18 and 19

    line 18:
    wget ‘http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/pdc/11.0.1.152/install_flash_player_11_linux.x86_64.tar.gz’

    line 19:
    tar zxvf install_flash_player_11_linux.x86_64.tar.gz

  4. Thank you very much Romeo for the help, you’ve really got a huge load off my shoulders. I just couldn’t get flash to work in Mozilla and in Chrome at the same time, it was either one or the other. Now everything’s perfect. You’re great.
